J. Beischel Electric Takes the LEED

The Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc. (IEC) is pleased to announce that J. Beischel Electric of Cincinnati, Ohio received the IEC National Award of Excellence in LEED Approved Construction during the 52nd Annual IEC National Convention and Electric Expo in St. Louis, Missouri for its work on the Sycamore Township Fire Department Station #93.
DESIGN: The Sycamore Township Fire Department Station #93 is the only Fire Station in the Midwest designed to comply within the conditions and parameters necessary to achieve LEED Certified Gold Level certification. From the sorting of the trash to the types of LED bulbs used, green environmental thinking was incorporated into all aspects of the Fire Station.front of building sconces.JPG
OBSTACLES OVERCOME: Tying in a PV system, generator, transfer switch, and electric service was a daunting task. Having never dealt with a PV system, J. Beischel was very excited to learn and work on such a large project and teamed up with a reputable contractor who was certified and willing to work with them. J. Beischel employees also enrolled in college PV courses to learn all they could about PV systems.
SAFETY: J. Beischel Electric held weekly safety meetings while working on the Sycamore Township Fire Department Station project. With no injuries on this project, the company was able to maintain its zero accident history.
THE NUTS & BOLTS: Being a life saving facility, there could be no down time. A 600 amp full Emergency backup generator was installed with an 800 amp transfer switch. LED can lights were used for firemen sleeping spaces and conference room because they were dimmable and barely used 15 watts of power. In the apparatus bay where the Fire and EMS trucks were located, T8 f-bays with integral motion detectors were placed in each fixture so that lights come on only when necessary and turn off within a minute of non-movement.
The Award of Excellence in LEED Approved Construction recognizes IEC member companies that demonstrate innovation, new ideas, and success in efficient energy or green building construction projects. The LEED Approved Construction award is given to any new project (residential, commercial, or industrial) in which a majority of power usage is designed for energy savings and reduced consumption.
